Miniature Schnauzer / Vintage Dog Rescue
Featured Dog Looking for a Home |
|
It has already been a busy year! In the first five months of 2011, we have already taken in 58 new Miniature Schnauzers and adopted 52 Minis into wonderful new homes.
This time of year, we try to get as many of the dogs into daycare as possible. Our local doggie daycare designates Tuesday as “Small Dog Day”. The dogs get to run around outside all day, and meet new friends, both canine and human, and we get feedback about how they behave with dogs that they don’t know and new people. This information is very helpful in finding just the right home for each dog.
If you would like to help us get each dog to daycare as often as possible, send your contribution of $10 for each day you wish to donate and write “daycare” in the memo line. You can send your donation to 19 North Ranch Road, Littleton CO 80127.
We couldn’t save as many Minis without the help of lots of wonderful foster families. Right now, we have a number of special and special needs Minis who would love to find their “furever” families, or at least find a great foster home in the meantime.
Fuzzy is about 2 years old. He was hit by a car resulting in a cracked vertebra and a dislocated hip. The problem is that the treatment for the cracked vertebra is 8-10 weeks of cage rest, while the treatment for the dislocated hip was surgery and then lots of exercise. Hard to do both, so Fuzzy has spent his time in a kennel being quiet and we have learned to do canine physical therapy. Fuzzy is ready to get out of his crate, but will continue to need lots of physical therapy. He is an active little guy and gets along well with the one other dog he has been going outside with. He desperately needs some one-on-one attention and lots of walks. He is now healed enough that he can start playing with another small dog.
Shilah is a 10 year old female mini who speaks Spanish (but is learning English)! Her Dad passed away last fall and her Mom moved back to South America. She is a feisty little girl who is healthy, with just a touch of arthritis in her hind legs. She has a great appetite, loves her treats and her naps. She gets along well with other dogs, and likes her outdoor time.
Stoney came into rescue from a local shelter, where she had spent a month without getting adopted. Little wonder: she smelled, and was probably in a great deal of pain. A trip to the vet determined that she had a HUGE bladder stone that needed to be removed immediately. She has recovered well from the surgery, but will probably always need more frequent than normal trips outside, so she would do best in a home with someone to let her out every 4 to 5 hours.
Max is a 3 year old with diabetes. He is a poodle/ Mini mix with the best personality characteristics of both breeds! He is a beautiful light silver color, but a little on the large size for a mini. He has been diabetic since he was one year old, so he knows the drill and does well with his medication. He is very affectionate, and loves to wander around his fenced yard and “smell the roses.” He also gets along well with other dogs.
We all know that Minis can be very stubborn and sometimes ignore you. Bandit is an 8 year old white lover who has a good reason for this – he’s deaf. He is a sweet little guy who loves to be held and responds well to visual cues. He likes to go outside with the other dogs in his foster home, but would love a home to call his own.
Marci spent the first 5 years of her life in a puppy mill. This abuse leaves terrible emotional scars on little dogs, and makes it very difficult for them to trust people. In most cases they can learn to trust, but it takes patience. An understanding one-on-one foster situation could teach Marci to trust people, and make her adoptable. Once a puppy mill dog learns to trust you, they become like little Velcro dogs. They learn to love the human touch that they used to fear.
All of these dogs have been quarantined in rescue for at least two weeks. They are healthy and fully vaccinated. Rescue will continue to cover any medical costs. You just provide the food and the love. If you can help by fostering any of these dogs, if you are interested in adopting one of them, or if you have any questions, please contact me at sblummanick@aol.com.
